The European Janggi Federation (EJF) in cooperation with the local host, the
German Janggi Federation (GJF) as well as “Johannes-Brahms-Konservatorium” is happy to announce the organization of a the

1^st European Janggi Championship on

26^th & 27^th of October 2019 in Hamburg.

Our efforts in promoting the game especially in Europe forced us to do the next step: organizing a European Championship in Janggi – also known as “Korean Chess” – a game with a long history and highly respected in Korea.

We are especially proud of the fact, that many local players from Germany as well as the strongest players from Europe – coming from Poland, Russia, France, Austria, Turkey, Netherlands and Ukraines – have already committed themselves to participate; securing the highest level of play in Europe; fighting for the title as European Champion.

Besides the main tournament, we also organize the European Blitz Championship with the extra option to gain the title as European Blitz-Champion 2019.

Some minor groups of children already play seriously Janggi in different parts of Europe. The European Janggi Federation reflects on this development by organizing the 1^st European Youth Championship 2019 for participants below 18 years of age.

All tournaments are played in an Open format, which entitles all interested players living in Europe to participate.

We will play according to the International Janggi Tournament Rules, which are currently in use by the Korean Janggi Federation (Southkorea).

Playing time:

After reaching 1 hour of overall playing time, the games will be finished by the referee; counting the remaining material. Red must do the last move.

We are especially proud of the fact, that many local players from Germany as well as the strongest players from Europe – coming from Poland, Russia, France, Austria, Turkey, Netherlands and Ukraine – have already committed themselves to participate in this special side tournament ; securing the highest level of play in Europe; fighting for the title as European Janggi Blitz Champion 2019.

Janggi auf dem Korea-Tag 2018

Die spannende koreanische Schachvariante „Janggi“ ist nun bereits zum dritten Mal auf dem Hamburger Korea-Tag präsentiert worden. Am 15. Dezember 2018 lud die Deutsch-Koreanische Gesellschaft Hamburg e.V. (DKGH) ein zum Koreanischen Festival 2018 in das „Museum am Rothenbaum“ (kurz: MARKK), und dort mischte an diesem Adventssonnabend auch die „Janggi Platform Germany“ mit an mehreren Tischen im Kuppelsaal des imposanten Traditionsbaus, der unlängst noch unter dem Namen „Völkerkundemuseum“ firmierte.

Hauptevent war das „Admiral Yi Sun-sin Janggi Memorial 2018“. Das Turnier wurde dem Retter Koreas (geb. am 28. April 1545) gegen die Japaner gewidmet, weil sich der Todestag des heldenhaften Flottenkommandanten (16. Dezember 1598) einen Tag nach der Veranstaltung zum 420. Mal jährte.

Den geschichtsträchtigen Leistungsvergleich gewann Niels Meinköhn vor seinem Bruder Ian; hinter dem Spitzenduo überquerten der Drittplatzierte Kerem Kuruca sowie Verfolger Sven Meinköhn die Ziellinie.

Parallel zum Wettkampfgeschehen luden Bretter die Festivalbesucher dazu ein, das Janggi näher kennenzulernen und gleich praktisch auszuprobieren. Dabei durften Jürgen Woscidlo und Dr. René Gralla, die Norddeutschlands Janggi-Community im MARKK vertraten, einen besonderen Gast an ihrem Stand begrüßen: Herrn Lee Jeong Pil vom Busan Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra. Der Kulturbotschafter aus der Hafenstadt am Japanischen Meer (anderslautend die offizielle Sprachregelung in Südkorea: Donghae, übersetzt: „Ostmeer“) erwies sich auch als Meister der Mattkombinationen: Gegen Jürgen Woscidlo bestritt er ein freundschaftliches Match über drei Runden und markierte nach spannungsgeladenen Duellen mit einem makellosen 3:0-Saldo seine echte Klasse.

Allen Teilnehmern am „Admiral Yi Sun-sin Janggi Memorial 2018“ ein großer Dank für tollen Sportsgeist und herzliche Glückwünsche zu den erfolgreichen Platzierungen. Und ein Extradank gilt Dr. René Gralla, der mit seinem 3D-Janggi-Set aus der Heimwerkstatt die Blicke der Festivalcrowd auf sich zog.

Ein Luftkreuzer aka Cannon der Blue Army macht sich bereit zum Durchstarten.

Das Match hat begonnen, und beide Parteien haben Flying Turtle Ship-Cannons jeweils ins Zentrum der eigenen Verbände einfliegen lassen.

Fazit: Janggi auf dem Koreanischen Festival 2018 ließ auch manche Expatriates aus Fernost das spannende strategische Spiel ihrer Heimat wiederentdecken. Eine Rückbesinnung auf die Wurzeln der eigenen Spielkultur, die in Zeiten einer globalisierten Medienwelt notwendiger denn je zu sein scheint. Siehe die kessen Mädels der neuen K-Pop-Superband BLACKPINK: Im Clip zu ihrem aktuellen Megahit „DDU-DU DDU-DU“ haben Jisoo, Jennie, Rose und Lisa zwar ein Schach-(!!)-Motiv eingebaut …

… aber ab Minute 0:29 sehen wir dort leider nicht das ehrwürdige Janggi, sondern schnöde die Figuren des Internationalen Schachs!
Die „Janggi Platform Germany“ mit Frontmann Jürgen Woscidlo muss also noch heftige Überzeugungs- und Nachhilfearbeit leisten – sogar in Südkorea.
Eine erste Gelegenheit an ziemlich prominenter Stelle bietet sich dafür später in diesem Jahr, wenn BLACKPINK im Rahmen ihrer Welttournee 2019 das einzige Deutschlandkonzert in Berlin geben.

Verbeugung vor dem legendären Kommodore: Janggi auf dem Koreanischen Festival 2018 am 15. Dezember in Hamburgs „MARKK“ – Zum Gedenken an den 420. Todestag von Admiral Yi Sun-sin

Sowohl im Süden als auch im Norden der geteilten Halbinsel verehren ihn die Menschen als größten Helden Koreas: Admiral Yi Sun-sin, der Ende Oktober 1597 in der epochalen Seeschlacht von Myongnyang mit nur 13 Schiffen eine 27-fach (!) überlegene japanische Armada vernichtend schlug. Und weil sich der Todestag des brillanten Flottenführers am dritten Advent 2018 zum 420. Mal jährt, soll am unmittelbar vorausgehenden Sonnabend ein Event in der besonderen koreanischen Schachvariante Janggi, die zum Programm des Festivals „Uri Korea“ (übersetzt: „Unser Korea“) in Hamburgs „Museum am Rothenbaum“ (MARKK) gehört, an den legendären Kommodore erinnern.

Schließlich prägen überraschend modern anmutende und äußerst mobile Artillerieeinheiten das stets hoch spannende Geschehen auf den exakt 90 Brettpositionen des besagten Strategiespiels aus Fernost. Und jene „Kanonen“, wie sie heißen, schlagen derart heftig und effektiv zu, dass sie wie virtuelle Repliken der innovativen TURTLE SHIPS anmuten, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts das Rückgrat von Yi Sun-sins Seestreitkräften bildeten.

Entsprechend inspiriert Janggi zu einer spielerischen Begegnung mit einer wichtigen Phase in der Geschichte Koreas. Und deswegen möchten sich Jürgen Woscidlo und René Gralla, die am 15. Dezember 2018 diese vorweihnachtliche Aktion in K-Mindsports leiten, mit ihrer Initiative ausdrücklich verneigen vor dem genialen Yi Sun-sin. Zwischen 11 und 17 Uhr können „Uri Korea“-Besucher im Gewölbesaal des MARKK, das früher unter „Völkerkundemuseum“ firmierte, an einem Janggi-Workshop teilnehmen. Außerdem werden, falls sich genügend Kandidaten finden, tolle Pokale in einem Schnellturnier ausgespielt.

Parallel rockt heißer K-Pop das Festival, und in den Pausen locken asiatische Leckereien aus meisterlicher Hand. Organisator ist die Deutsch-Koreanische Gesellschaft Hamburg; und die Community der Janggi-Fans dankt der Ehrenvorsitzenden Frau Okhoa Meyer von der Twer sowie Herrn Präsident Shin-Gyu Kang ausdrücklich dafür, im Rahmen des renommierten Kulturtages den traditionsreichen Denksport der Koreaner jetzt auch einem norddeutschen Publikum präsentieren zu dürfen.

Admiral Yi Sun-Sin — Historiker vergleichen ihn mit Britanniens Seehelden Lord Nelson: Koreas unvergessener Admiral Yi Sun-sin. In Hanseong, wie die damalige Hauptstadt (und das heutige Seoul) hieß, am 28. April 1545 geboren in eine adlige Familie, die sich aber von den Intrigen am Königshof der Joseon-Dynastie fernhielt. Und gefallen am 16. Dezember 1598 in der Schlussphase der Seeschlacht an der Noryang-Straße – die trotzdem von den Koreanern gewonnen wurde, weil der tödlich verwundete Yi Sun-sin seinem Stab ausdrücklich verboten hatte, die Flotte vor dem Ende des Kampfes über das Schicksal ihres Kommandanten zu informieren.
